In 1879 the original Eagle Mountain House, a New England farmhouse accommodating up to twelve guests, opens. The Inn is then expanded to two buildings accommodating up to 125 guests who enjoyed the spectacular views, rural surroundings and sports like skiing, hiking, snowshoeing, sledding, and trout fishing. Our barn is original to this period including the Carriage House ballroom which originally held horse carts and carriages, then was used for automobiles and now handles banquet functions up to 225 people.

In 1915 the main Inn was completely destroyed by fire; however, in less than a year the present Eagle Mountain House was rebuilt and re-opened in 1916. The new Inn boasted a 280 foot verandah, and 125 rooms with 100 full baths.

World Famous Photographer Clifton Church documented many scenes around the original Inn and stayed as a guest even after the fire. The "Jackson" sign hanging on the covered bridge was a gift from Mr. Church in the 20's. His pictures of the Inn are displayed in the Eagle Landing Tavern.

In 1931
the farm land and cow pasture in front of the Inn was turned into the Eagle Mountain House Golf Links by Arthur Gale, son of Mr. & Mrs. Cyrus Gale who built the original Inn. Today it is one of the most beautiful 9-hole mountain courses in New England with three elevated tee shots along the Nationally protected Wildcat river.

In 1937 Ski-meister Beno Rybizka ran the first organized skiing in the Mount Washington Valley on the 9th hole of the Eagle Mountain House Golf Course. He had come from the Hannes Schneider Ski School of St. Anton-am-Arlberg, Austria to start Carroll Reed's Eastern Slope Region Ski School headquartered in the Wildcat Tavern in Jackson Village.

In 1958 Mr. & Mrs. Orin Chadbourn (Marcia Gale) took the Inn over and installed the swimming pool in 1959. They owned the Inn until April 1973.

In 1986 the Inn was totally restored as "A Historic Country Inn" by the present owner's association. It now offers 93 guest rooms and suites each privately owned. The owner's association strives to maintain historic nature in the Inn, while creating a year round resort for the publics enjoyment.

In 1991 the Eagle Mountain House est. 1879 is nominated by the Secretary of the Interior for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places and is approved by the Congress of the United States of America.

Historic Hotels of AmericaIn 1995 the property is listed on the National Trust for Historic Preservation and joins the Balsams as the second property in New Hampshire awarded membership in Historic Hotels of America. Our mission is to return the Inn to its rightful place as the best year-round Grand Hotel in New Hampshire offering "hearty fare, cordial hospitality and wholesome recreational activities for the entire family!"
